Week 7 Term 3 2020

Week 7 already?! It’s a roller-coaster of a year but you’d never know it when you see the beautiful smiling faces that we are surrounded by every day.  5-7 year olds are not good at seeing how much work goes into supporting them in their sporting, academic, cultural and emotional learning. So, on behalf of Kakano 1, 2, and 3, Thank You!

Fathers’ Day gifts are on sale for $3 this week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We’ll update and share the poster as soon as we get it.

Our Learning this week:

Religious Education

We are learning how our Parish is a sign of God’s love in the world.  When we do kind things - we are sharing God’s love with others. When we gather as a community to support each other - we are sharing God’s love.

Literacy

Reading and writing use many of the same skills and strategies - sounding out, chunking words (breaking them into bits), making meaning, asking questions… This week we are going to explore how the things we are good at in phonics can be used in reading and writing (and vice versa).

Mathematics

We are learning that the numbers in addition problems can be swapped around to make the maths easier. 3+24 gives the same answer as 24+3 but it’s much easier to put 24 in our heads and count on 3 more rather than the other way around.  We will also be practising counting in ones and tens 0→ 100 and 100→0.

Monday:

Tuesday: Go4it with Khush

       Library - Kakano 2

Wednesday: Library - Kakano 1

Gymnastics at lunchtime (bring your shorts)

      Junior chess club at lunchtime

Thursday: Library - Kakano 3

Friday:  Junior chess club at lunchtime

Show Mrs T your water bottle and say ‘Wai’.

Spring has Sprung! Have a great week.

Pasifika

On Friday, 2 big girls came to collect our Pasifika kids for their practice. Hayden asked if he could go, too. The big girls told us anyone could try Pasifka group. Before Mrs T could even ask who wanted to go the whole class had jumped up and shot out the door. We had so much fun! Looks like Kakano 3 are joining Pasifika.

Week 5 in Kakano 1-3

We love starting our day with play.  Our Kakano 1-3 kids can now independently choose their own activity AND they often make up new games or change the rules to make an old game even better.  We are seeing loads of creativity, kindness and perseverance lately, too.
What a great bunch of learners we have!

Week 6 Term 3

We remain in Alert Level 2 and look forward to seeing all of you at school on Monday.  If anything changes from Monday’s announcement we will keep you informed.  Remember if you are unwell you must stay at home until you are better.

Please can you return the home learning packs that were sent home a week ago. Our kids are rocking and rolling with their learning and we would like to make sure that, if we have to go back into lockdown, the resources in these packs are right for your child - thanks to those students who have already brought them back.

While at Alert Level 2 it means early pick up at 2:45.  Thank you for also dropping your children off to school on time, so they are ready to start at 8:45.

Each day we have our fruit and brain break in our morning block. Please pack fruit for this break - it helps their brains and bodies reboot for their learning.

Children MUST HAVE a drink bottle filled with water at school in Alert Level 2. The water fountains have been taped off and cannot be used at any time. We are able to refill your child’s water bottle during the day as needed.

Kakano 1 have their assembly on Friday. If we are still under Level 2 restrictions we will have a virtual assembly. If the restrictions are lifted then we will be in the hall. Mrs D will keep you informed of what is happening.

Literacy - Our focus is comprehension. In reading we need to be able to understand what we read in our books. You can help me to do this by asking me questions about the book we are reading. In writing I need to make sure that others can read what I have written and it makes sense.

Maths - Our focus is counting accurately. We will be using dice, games and hundred squares to count forwards and backwards with accuracy.  Please help me practice this for numbers to 100.

Religious Education - Our focus is  The Church - we are thinking about the parish we belong to and the key people who are involved within our parish.

Week 5 Term 3 2020

We remain in Alert Level 2 and look forward to seeing all of you at school on Monday. Remember if you are unwell you must stay at home until you are better. Please hang on to the packs that were sent home on Friday - remember they are like a Christmas present and we cannot open them until (or if) Jacinda says we are going into Alert Level 3.

Thank you to all of our parents who have jumped straight back into early pick ups at 2:45. It wasn’t easy having to change mid week and we do appreciate the disruption this may have caused to your daily routines. Thank you for also dropping your children off to school on time, so they are ready to start at 8:45.

Each day we have our fruit and brain break in our morning block. Many children are not bringing fruit to school. Please pack fruit for this break - their brains and bodies need the nourishment, especially with the warmer days we are experiencing.

Children MUST HAVE a drink bottle filled with water at school in Alert Level 2. The water fountains have been taped off and cannot be used at any time. We are able to refill your child’s water bottle during the day as needed. Warmer days mean the children are desperately thirsty when they come in from their morning tea and lunch breaks and in need of a drink.

The magic words are 'tena koe'.  Write them on a little piece of paper and ask your child to slip the secret message to Miss Ryan.

Literacy - Our focus is comprehension. In reading we need to be able to understand what we read in our books. You can help me to do this by asking me questions about the book we are reading. In writing I need to make sure that others can read what I have written and it makes sense.

Maths - Our focus is fast recall of the number after or the number before. This will help us when we are counting forwards and backwards to solve problems. Please help me practice this for numbers to 100.

Religious Education - Our focus is Jesus shows love in different ways. Last week we looked at how we can show love at school and at home, and what makes us a good friend. Please check in with me during the week and ask me how I have been doing this, so I remember to always show love and respect to my friends and family.

This Week:

Mon -

Tues - Go4it with Khush

  • Library - Kakano 2

Wed - Library - Kakano 1

  • Gymnastics at lunchtime (bring your shorts)

  • Junior chess club at lunchtime

Thurs - Library - Kakano 3

Fri - Junior chess club at lunchtime

(no assembly due to level 2 restrictions)

Please, please, please have a hunt for your library books. Some Kakano 3 children have books issued before lockdown or even earlier. Other Kakano 3 kids have managed to score 5 books! (our limit is 2 so Kay is being very generous). With decades of junior experience under my belt I can advise you to check under the bed, on your bookshelf and under car seats - these seem to be the most popular places to lose/hide library books. Our library day is Thursday - lets see if we can get them all back.
