Week 12

Our final week of Term 2 is here. It has been a loooooong term and some of our little cherubs will need a lot of rest over the holidays (so will the teachers). The time has certainly flown by and we have loved sharing in their learning journey.

School photos

On Wednesday we have our school photos. We are not sure what time our slot is but if you would like to put a brush or comb in your child's bag we can help them look super amazing for their shot. Boys wear the school jersey (not fleece). If you have a jersey, please wear it so we don't have last minute jersey swaps that mess up their flash hair.

Literacy focus

This week we will be having our home groups. We will continue to work on fluency. We need to read smoothly all the way to each full-stop. Reading fluently can help us to understand the text a bit better.

In writing, we will be continuing to make our sentences longer and more interesting. We will aim to use descriptive words and ‘because’, ‘so’ and ‘and’ to join ideas.

Maths Focus:

We will be continuing with subtraction. You can help by practicing counting backwards from any number 0-50. We also need to use our literacy skills in maths - what words tell us that the problem is subtraction? (Take away, minus left, gives, …)

Religious Education

We will be looking at the sacrament of baptism exploring how we are welcomed into God’s family, the symbols and rituals involved.

Reminders:

  • If your child is unwell PLEASE keep them at home to help prevent the spread of germs and sickness. We have worked so hard to keep ourselves germ free since coming back to school and we would like to stay that way.

  • If it is wet please can you pick up your child from the classroom. This means we are not keeping them standing around in the rain.

  • The RE Art competition closes this week. The theme is Catholic Character (Mary MacKillop, symbols, Jesus, bible, ...). You can use any medium that you want - knit, paint, draw, sculpt…  Have fun! This is the final week to get your child’s entries in for the RE competition. Well done to those children who have entered already.

  • This week:

Week 10 T2 2020

Time flies when you’re having fun and this term is really flying! We are really very proud of our Kakano whanau. These incredible little people are really moving with their learning, independence and, best of all, they show us every day that they are kind, respectful, positive and caring. We are so lucky to have such wonderful workmates.

This week:

Mon:

Tues: K2 - Library

Wed: K1 - Library

Thurs: K3 - Library

Fri: Sacred Heart Liturgy

       Golden Time

Literacy Focus:

We have noticed that many of our learners have quite strong skills in phonics, reading or writing BUT they aren’t always able to see how their skills and knowledge in one area can help them in another. This week we will be making the connections between phonics, reading and writing a little clearer.

Maths Focus:

We will be continuing with subtraction. You can help by practising counting backwards from any number 0-50. We also need to use our literacy skills in maths - what words tell us that the problem is subtraction? (Take away, left, gives, …)

Religious Education:

Ko te Wairua Tapu a te Atua, he wairua aroha, he wairua rangimarie,

he wairua hari. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of love, peace and joy.  We will be learning how to share love, peace and joy with the people around us. We will also be preparing for the Feast of the Sacred Heart. On this feast day, we recognise and celebrate Jesus endless love for us. If you celebrate the Sacred Heart in a special way (heart art, heart baking, special prayer…) we would love for you to share your celebration with us on educa.

Mid-year reporting and conferencing

We have decided due to the Covid-19 outbreak to do our mid-year reporting a little differently this year.  You have been a huge part of our teaching team this term and we are very interested in getting your views on how learning at home went for your child. The rubric, that was sent home on Friday, will form the base of a ‘collaborative mid-year report’.

Please, complete the learning at home section and return the form to school, by Wednesday, so that we can complete our part.  In the first weeks of Term 3 we will sit down together and use the completed form, as well as information about academic progress, to set goals for the new term. We have really enjoyed working alongside you this term and are looking forward to keeping the momentum going. Thank you for your incredible efforts and your support.

Assembly

Another big "Congrats!" to Kakano 3 for their assembly. You are so cool, calm and collected - I am a very proud teacher. I have put a few photos in the previous blog post AND there are a bunch more on educa.

have a good week

Friendship

Kakano 3 led the assembly on Friday afternoon. It was all about friendship. Here are some photos that show what lovely friends the Kakano 3 kids really are. You kids are the best!

Week 9 Term 2 2020

We have had an amazing week with our lovely Kakano children. The children are so settled walking into school on their own and are very happy and content completing their daily tasks.  A big well done to all our parents and whanau for the great job you are doing to grow your child’s independence.

Hopefully later in the week we should be able to move to Level 1. This should mean that there will be even fewer restrictions on us. We will let you know of any changes as they occur.

Reminders

  • School drop off time is now 8:30-9:00. School pick up time is 2:45-3:00. If it is wet, you will need to pick up from Kakano, please.

  • The drinking fountains are still out of action while we are at Level 2. Please make sure your child comes to school with a drink bottle filled with water.

Learning in Week 9:

Literacy

In reading and phonics this week we will be cross grouping our children in Kakano 1-3. This means we can focus on each group and ensure they get the continued high level of differentiation with their learning.

We will continue to work on our 5 finger retell. We introduced this to the children last week. Firstly, who are the characters in the story? Next where is the story set? Then what happens at the beginning of the story, in the middle and at the end.

Maths

In maths we are working on subtraction. We will be counting back from different numbers in order to practice this concept. The children will continue to say how they solved a problem and give reasons for their thinking.

Religious Education

This week we are listening to stories about Jesus and how we can follow in his footsteps to be a good friend. Using the Holy Spirit to guide our decisions while playing, sharing and working alongside others.

We are all looking forward to a wonderful week ahead. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Week 8 Term 2 2020

We have had another great week with our gorgeous kakano children. Their independence continues to grow - thank you for your support in helping with this.

  • School drop off time is now 8:30-9:00. School pick up time is 2:45-3:00. If it is wet, you will need to pick up from Kakano, please.

  • If you still have Lockdown reading packs or borrowed Chromebooks, they need to be returned ASAP

  • The drinking fountains are still out of action during Level 2. Please make sure your child comes to school with a drink bottle filled with water.

A message from Mrs Cato

We would like to seek feedback from parents about the  COVID-19 "Learning from Home" experience over the COVID-19 Level 3 and 4 period. The link to the survey can be found here https://forms.gle/M6e3mZ2UBN5zKwAL6 The survey will remain open until 9pm on Wednesday 3 June. Please can you help us by completing this survey. Thanks.

We have tried to make the survey quick to complete and have a random draw for a $50 New World voucher for every 50 respondents ie If we can get 200 families to respond there will be 4 x $50 vouchers.

The first two prizewinners have been announced - respondent number 26 Mel Palomares and respondent number 58 Eunice Jung. Let's see if we can get at least another 50 responses in the next few days.

Learning in Week 8:

Literacy

Our focus this week is on retell. This needs to be done in sequence from the start of the book - what happened first, then, next, last. Retelling stories allows children to organise and describe events which enhances their understanding of what they have read.

Maths

We are continuing to explain how we solved a problem. When kids can explain their thinking, and the steps they took, they are better able to refine and improve their strategies. Meta-cognition (thinking about your thinking) is a key tool for learning.

Religious Education

This week we are learning how to recognise and respond to the Holy Spirit. How do our words and actions show the Holy Spirit is in us? The Holy Spirit helps us to do the right thing and treat others with kindness and respect.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. See you all tomorrow. Hopefully the sun will be out.
