Week 10 Term 3

Another term has gone rushing by.  We are so very proud of our K1, 2 and 3 kids. They are kind, enthusiastic, hard working and a whole lot of fun to spend time with.  We are really lucky to work with such incredible people. Thank you Kakano 1, 2, 3 - you are awesome! And a big thanks to all of our wonderful whanau. We couldn’t do it without you. Your encouragement, support and help at home make a huge difference. You are awesome, too!

Sports photos

Children need to bring their sports uniforms in a named bag, please.

Mini marathon

Mini marathon is this Friday. Transport notices were sent home to all enrolled runners - please, return these ASAP.

Library Books

Our librarian loves encouraging the kids to read over the holidays and she, very generously, allows our kids to take extra books for the holiday breaks.  If your child would like to choose some great new books for holiday reading, please, help them to find and return the 'old' books they have hidden around the house.  Some kids have books that have been out since pre-lockdown!

If you have been collecting Yummy stickers, please, bring them to Mrs. Dinniss by Sept.23rd. You could also start collecting stickers ready for next year - here is the link to the yummy sticker collection chart. Mrs Todd and the Young Vinnies are still collecting bread tags, too. (Bring a Yummy Sticker or a bread tag to Mrs T and get a jellybean - shhh!).

Year 2 Parent Information Evening - Chromebooks and Google

This meeting is for parents who will have a student in Year 3 in 2021. It aims to help you gain a better understanding of how and why we use G Suite for Education and Chromebooks with our Yr 3-6 learners.

When: 7.15 - 8.00pm Wednesday 23 September (if we are at Alert level 1)

Where: Room 14 (near the office).

Class Placement Forms

These are due by Friday. A lot of work goes into ensuring the best decisions are made for every child - this includes social needs, emotional needs and academic needs. This form is one of the pieces of information that we use to guide class placements for 2021.

Religious Education

We are wrapping up our Church Strand work. This week we will be identifying all of the wonderful things in our life that make us grateful.  Mary Mackillop teaches us that we should have an attitude of gratitude.  We will also be thinking about the different ways that we could be a little more responsible.  Talk to your kids about the little jobs that they could help with around the home.  Age appropriate chores include: cleaning up their own toys, unloading the dishwasher, setting the table, putting their dirty washing out and clean washing away, making their bed or working alongside a big person in the garden.

Literacy and Numeracy

We are going to have a bit of a review week.  We are going over some of the strategies we have been working on this term and will see how we went with our Term 3 goals.

Week 9 Term 3

Only 2 weeks to go until the end of term. Our wonderful Kakano children are doing an excellent job of keeping focused with their learning. Please continue to read with your child each night. Also, can you provide them with a water bottle and a fruit snack for our brain break.

This week is Māori Language week. The chosen theme for 2020 is again 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’.

‘Kia Kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying  - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'. We will ensure we are continuing to use Te reo throughout our day with an extra emphasis on waiata and phrases throughout the week.

A reminder that we have a Teachers’ Only day this week on Friday 18th September. We will be involved in professional development focusing on science and digital technologies. If you need care for your child on this day you can contact Mary-Ann Roling to book a place for your child.(PHONE 0211 215599)

Thanks so much to those who have returned the forms regarding class placements for your child for 2021. The information you provide will help us with classroom planning for 2021. Please return your completed form to the blue box in the school office no later than Friday 25 September.

If we stay at Level 2 next week then the Mini Marathon will be postponed. We will keep you posted about this event. If you would like to download a passport for the event then click on the link. Mini marathon forms

Well done to our gymnastic team who competed well on Friday bringing home many individual medals and the school trophy for ‘best behaved’. Well done to our children.

Religious Education

We are continuing to learn about privileges and responsibilities in our parish and how this might look for our students and families. We will also be singing a variety of waiata and write our own pepeha.

Literacy

Reading and writing use many of the same skills and strategies - robotting/chunking words (breaking them into bits), making meaning, asking questions.  We will also be adding adjectives and similes to our writing to add interest for the reader.

Mathematics

In maths we will continue being Number Agents in a specialist secret agency who solve problems for clients. Our Kakano students were so excited with this idea last week-ask them about it.

Nativity of Mary

Today we celebrated the Nativity of Mary.  We listed to some lovely prayers - Sierra read a prayer in front of the whole school. We sang "Happy Birthday" to Mary.  Luke took a pretend birthday cake up to the altar for Mary. We all did some pretty amazing singing and we were very respectful (Respect is one of our values).

Week 8 Term 3 2020

 Week 8  Term 3

HAPPY  FATHER’S  DAY to all the amazing dads, step-dads and grandads in Kakano 1, 2 and 3. We hope you’re having a wonderful day with family and getting spoilt rotten.

This week is Tongan language week. We will be looking at some phrases and songs in Tongan throughout the week.

Wow - three weeks left of term and it’s holiday time (not that we’re counting). We are continually amazed at how creative, friendly and supportive our Kakano children are. They constantly surprise us with their thoughts and actions. Help us to keep this momentum going over the next three weeks by making sure they are drinking plenty of water, eating healthily and getting lots of sleep.

Our Learning this week:

Religious Education

We are learning about privileges and responsibilities in our families, our school and our parish. Part of this is being able to demonstrate responsibility for our belongings. We will be working hard to show that we can do this throughout the day. At school I will be keeping my cubby and my school bag tidy, putting my jumper away when I take it off, putting away what I use throughout the day. We can also show responsibility at home by having chores to complete - putting my lunch box on the bench each night, hanging up my uniform, making my bed, putting my book bag into my school bag.

Literacy

Reading and writing use many of the same skills and strategies - sounding out, chunking words (breaking them into bits), making meaning, asking questions… This week we are going to explore how the things we are good at in phonics can be used in reading and writing etc.

Bring your gorgeous smile to Miss Ryan and say ‘Malo e lelei’

Mathematics

We are learning that the numbers in addition problems can be swapped around to make the maths easier. 3+24 gives the same answer as 24+3 but it’s much easier to put 24 in our heads and count on 3 more rather than the other way around.  We will also be practising counting in ones and tens 0→ 100 and 100→0.
